@ Vancouver Downtown Eastside (2/17)
Thank you to everyone who came out to our backpack run in the Downtown East Side (DTES) this Saturday! 17 students (our largest trip to date!) braved the snow at 7 AM in the morning to handout various provisions to those battling this weekends harsh weather in the DTES. We managed to hand out some much needed winter clothing including shoes, gloves, scarves, socks and sweaters directly to those living in the DTES. We additionally, handed out sandwiches, fruits and other nutritious items to those living in the DTES. The residents of the DTES engaged the volunteers in lots of warm, interesting conversations and everyone had an enlightening time!
This trip would not have been possible without the expertise of Beneath One Sky UBC who led our backpack run downtown and co-hosted the food/clothing drive! The food bank is a fundamental part of the London community, providing hampers of non-perishable food once a month to those in need. Keep a look out for other opportunities with us to make a difference in the community!
@ Downtown London (11/16)
The first Good Deeds volunteer trip was held on the streets of downtown London on Friday, November 25th. Our team decided to prepare a wide array of delicious sandwiches (turkey, ham, peanut butter and jelly) for homeless individuals. Unlike in larger cities, homelessness is often hidden from most young adults in Hamilton. The purpose of this first trip was to not only provide many hungry people with a nutritious lunch but also educate young adults about the growing homelessness issue in London.
